Dog Temperament Tests: How We Build Safe and Happy Packs at Hounds Town

If your dog is a first-time Townie, you might know that bringing them into Hounds Town  means they’ll need to pass a temperament test. This quick, informal assessment helps our dog management experts  get to know your dog and make sure they’ll feel comfortable in our natural pack environment during doggy daycare.

Whether your dog’s demeanor is outgoing and high-energy or shy and relaxed, our temperament test helps us match them with the right specialized pack so they can thrive. If you’re curious what happens during a dog temperament test and why they’re important for doggy daycare at Hounds Town, we’ve got you covered.

What Happens During a Temperament Test?

Despite the name, our temperament test or evaluation is anything but stressful for your dog. It is a simple meet and greet or introduction to help us understand your dog’s social skills, play style, and energy level, so we can match them to a specialized play group that best fits their needs.

The evaluation also lets us look for any signs of aggression to ensure the safety of our other Townies and staff.

Here’s how it works:

  1. A staff member greets your pup and gives them a few minutes to adjust to the Hounds Town environment.
  2. We introduce your dog to one of our social resident dogs to observe their body language, confidence, and reactions, and ensure they’re ready to run with the pack.
  3. Once this process is complete, we’ll slowly introduce them into one of our specialized play groups.

The test usually takes just a few minutes, and we’re always patient with pups who need a little more time to warm up. The temperament test takes place in a controlled environment free of distractions, and both dogs are handled by one of our dog management experts to make sure everything goes smoothly. Our goal is to make sure your dog feels safe, comfortable, and ready to play.

No Breed or Ability Discrimination

At Hounds Town, all dogs are welcome. That means that “bully breeds” and other commonly excluded dogs are always treated with the same respect as every other pup. As long as your dog wants to play with the pack, they’re welcome at Hounds Town. Likewise, dogs with disabilities or mobility limitations can still enjoy daycare and enrichment on their terms. Whether they’re mingling in the pack or simply relaxing with other low-energy dogs, we create an inclusive experience that meets every dog where they are. Our team has experience working with all types of dogs, and we believe every pup deserves the chance to play.

Why Does My Dog Need a Temperament Test?

Our doggy daycare model is built around safe, enriching, all-day play in natural pack environments. Here’s why our temperament test is so important for all new Townies.

  • Testing helps us build specialized packs based on size, temperament, energy level, and play style
  • It prevents overstimulation and conflict by creating balanced, stable packs
  • Testing gives shy, anxious, or under-socialized dogs the opportunity to gain confidence
  • Allows our staff to look for any signs of aggression that could potentially endanger our other dogs and team.

From energetic puppies to mellow dogs, every dog has a place at Hounds Town. And because we offer multiple playrooms and small group sizes, dogs have the chance to socialize on many different levels.

Bring your pup in for doggy daycare at Hounds Town, and our staff will give them the temperament test they need in order to thrive in a natural pack environment. Once they’ve been introduced to their new pack, your dog becomes an official Townie, and we’ll keep their preferred pack on file anytime they need to drop in for daycare!
